An ode to that weird week between Christmas and New Years

Updated: Dec 30, 2022

It’s the strangest week of the year.

The week between Christmas and New Years is when most people aren’t entirely certain what day it is or what they’re doing next. Millions are on vacation and a large portion are traveling. People are sipping lattes at airport bars between flights and quietly anticipating the shine of a new year ahead.

And everyone is tired. More of us are simultaneously on a break from work than any other time of year and yet, so many of us are exhausted.

Memes and viral articles will tell you it’s the week of nothing – a name that doesn’t seem entirely fair. Yes, there’s a prominent belief that no one should expect much work out of employees this week. Yes, a whole lot of us are responding to emails with “let’s circle back to this after the new year.”

But perhaps having very little expected of us is exactly what we need.. What if this annual reset is one of the most productive things we do all year?

Taking time to just be and to just be right alongside the family and friends who love us might be the most important thing we can do for ourselves and the world around us.

Those moments – these days when time is a blur and loved ones are coming and going – those are the moments that make our memories. Those are the moments that build our stories.

So don’t feel guilty if you have to ask your brother to confirm that it’s actually Friday today. Don’t wonder if you should be responding to those emails sitting in your inbox. Take these moments, soak in the love and joy and memories.

Because productivity will return soon enough. Someone will expect something of you next week. And with the right amount of rest, you’ll be ready.
